The next application of the boat building process is the skin coat. The skin coat is a layer of fiberglass that reinforces the gel coat. Synthetic core materials, fiberglass mat and fiberglass roving are hand-laid into the mold over the gel coat for consistent strength and uniformity of thickness. A blend of polyester resin and metered catalyst completely saturates the fiberglass and bonds the multiple layers together.
